The United Way of ______________ is entangling itself with the sectarian discriminatory practicies of the BSA. There can be no doubt that the Scouting division of BSA openly applies a religious test to all volunteers, employees and applicants for membership. A simple phone call to any BSA office will reveal that nontheist adults and children will be turned away from participation in any Scouting division community program if they do not publically align themselves with BSA's political-religious theistic beliefs orthodoxy mandate. The BSA claims to have this right because it is a "private, religious organization". I ask you: Does not the funding of the BSA through United Way unallocated funds call into question the integrity of United Way funding? Would an openly anti-Semitic or white supremacist affiliate obtain funding if a United Way Board can conveniently overlook, excuse, or fail to detect such discrimination?
At the very least, the United Way should be candid enough to advise potential contributors that their contributions might be used to fund affiliates which will discriminate against them or their families based on a religious litmus test.
Please mail me a copy of the Member Agency Agreement the BSA signed and filed. As a public document this Agreement is supposed to be available upon request. The Agreement may provide evidence that the BSA deceives the public at large about its policy. For the BSA to enter into a non-discrimination agreement with the United Way while simultaneously denying, with prejudice, nontheist citizens of ______ County participation in programs and services reflects a lack of good faith.
